How to Measure for a Sectional Sofa
A sectional sofa gives you plenty of room to stretch out and relax. Larger than a standard sofa, sectionals are a good choice for big living areas where you like to relax and entertain. Before you visit our showroom to browse our in-stock items, it’s important to know how to measure for a sectional sofa, so you can be sure you’ve found the one that works in your space. Read on to learn a few tips and tricks for measuring your new sectional to make the process easier.
Sectional Measuring Basics
As you think about how to measure for a sectional sofa, there are two dimensions to keep an eye on. You’ll want to make sure you know the sectional’s overall width and overall height. You can do this by taking a tape measure and checking both the overall length and width of the piece in inches. Take note of the height of your sectional, measuring from the floor to the arms and from the floor to the back. If you’re looking at a curved sectional, the process is just a little bit different. Use some masking or painter’s tape and create a rectangular area around it, so that nothing is sticking out. This will be your guide to determine exactly where the curved sectional will go in your living room. Then, use your tape measure to record the length and width of the rectangle you made. These dimensions will be your template to help determine where the curved sectional would fit in your living room.
Finding the Right Measurements
Some sectionals are customizable with different options in terms of configurations and sizes, while others are only available as shown. To make sure you get the correct measurements, start by looking at the overall length. Next, look at the overall width of the piece which includes everything along the back including the center section, left or right-hand chaises, corner sections and more. If you want to put a coffee table in front of your sectional, measure the interior sides to ensure that it will fit. Remember that reclining sectionals stick out when they’re in the reclined position, so you may not be able to put a table directly in front of it.
How to Measure for a Sectional Sofa: Measure Twice, Buy Once
No two living rooms are alike, especially in terms of size. Before you buy one of our sectionals from BILTRITE Furniture-Leather-Mattresses, it’s important to make sure that you measure your living room. Take your tape measure and record the length, width, and height (ceiling height) and write these numbers down. This information will serve as the template for which size sectional fits comfortably in your living space. Don’t forget to measure things like the hallway and/or any doorways, too. This will help to ensure that your new sectional can easily fit into the room. You can also remove the legs on certain models to help them fit. After you have your living room dimensions, decide where you want the sectional to go. Your sectional should be away from high-traffic areas and should not block the natural flow of foot traffic. Corner sectionals look beautiful in one corner but make sure you have enough room behind it for cords and electrical outlets. If you’re buying a reclining sectional, you’ll need to place it a few feet from the wall, so it can fully recline.
Once you’ve chosen the spot where you want to put the sectional, use some masking tape or painter’s tape and mark the area. This gives you a visual of exactly where it will go and how much space it will take up. Feel free to move the tape around and re-mark the area until you find the right spot. Now, you can measure the dimensions of the area you marked. This is just to give you a general guideline as to how large or small the sectional needs to be. It’s a great way to gauge which style of sectional will fit best. Don’t forget to write down the height of your windowsill if you’re putting the sectional in front of a window. This will help you to make sure that the back of your sofa won’t be higher than the sill, so it won’t block the view. A good rule of thumb is to measure your room twice to ensure accuracy. Then, you can purchase your new sectional with peace of mind knowing it will be a fantastic fit.
